Behaviour/code of conduct in school
The goal of this session was to educate support staff to interact sensitively and respectfully with children, promoting a safe and positive school environment. Staff learned to respond calmly to upset children, model respectful behaviour, and support students during routines, ensuring every child felt valued and safe.
The activities included training on establishing positive communication with children, where staff practiced speaking kindly and listening attentively. They were sensitised on dos and don’ts and how to handle special children, and familiarised with all school processes, including transport management, behaviour monitoring, and disaster handling. Small-group sessions with case-based scenarios, facilitated by the school counselor, helped staff practice responding to emotional distress or conflicts, equipping them with practical skills to maintain a safe and supportive environment.
Participant feedback
Support staff shared that the session was very helpful and practical. They appreciated learning how to interact sensitively with children, guide them calmly, and handle behavioural or emotional challenges effectively. Many mentioned that the role-plays and case-based discussions made it easier to understand real-life situations and apply the strategies in their daily work.
They also valued the guidance on following school processes, such as managing transport, monitoring behaviour, and responding to emergencies. Overall, staff expressed increased confidence in supporting students and creating a safe, respectful, and positive school environment.
Outcomes achieved
The session helped support staff interact sensitively with children, manage routines, address behavioural or emotional challenges, and follow school processes like transport and emergency procedures. Case-based discussions also taught them to handle crises effectively, boosting their confidence and ability to maintain a safe and supportive school environment.
Challenges encountered
Some support staff were initially hesitant in discussions or role-plays and found it challenging to relate school processes to daily tasks or handle crisis situations. The counselor addressed this with clear explanations, practical examples, and small-group role-plays, helping staff understand concepts, gain confidence, and apply strategies effectively in the school environment.
